When it comes to adventure games, I have been focusing on the past, working my way up to the present day. Up until this point, I have been a player only and therefore haven’t really been paying attention to the current state of things.
As 2018 rolled around and I finally committed to creating my own game, I realised that I had no idea what the current market for adventure games was actually like.
I spent a few hours searching Steam, GoG, the App Store, and the excellent Adventure Gamers site and found a vibrant and innovative adventure game scene, almost exclusively driven by indie developers.
2017 saw the release of a variety of interesting and critically acclaimed games but, as I am working my way through my list of adventure games chronologically, I have not yet played any of these (except Night in the Woods, which I loved). However, here are all the ones that piqued my interest and that I hope to get around to sometime this year. In no particular order:
- Bertram Fiddle: Episodes 1 and 2
- The Darkside Detective
- Night in the Woods
- Thimbleweed Park
- Gorogoa
- The Frostrune
- Memoranda
- Paradigm
- Milkmaid of the Milky Way
- Tiny Echo
- Darkestville Castle
The Future
We’re barely into 2018 and I’m already excited about these games due to be released this year:
- Lamplight City
- Growbot
- Unforeseen Incidents
- Kentucky Route Zero Chapter 5?
- Simon’s Adventure Game(!)
